Applied Population Sciences Training and Research (APSTAR) Programme

Venue: University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Date: 16 – 20 April 2007 (first module commence, followed by three modules to be conducted in cycles)

Population and development challenges have become more prominent as South Africa’s population structure and trends changes. No community or country can effectively develop its people without an up-to-date knowledge of its population dynamics. The aim is to build the capacity of government officials and other development managers / planners to understand population issues in relation to broader development challenges. The focus is on how to integrate population factors into policies, programmes and activities.

The training will provide trainees with:

  • Basic demographic skills;
  • Skills to understand priority research areas on population matters;
  • Capacity to undertake sectoral population and development planning;
  • Expertise on integrating population priorities into development policies and programmes; and
  • Knowledge on the subject population studies.

Officials who have the responsibility for integrated development in the three spheres of government are strongly encouraged to participate.

The programme is conducted at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.  In order to qualify for the certificate it is compulsory to attend and complete all four modules.  Successful completion of the course will earn credits towards the Masters in Population Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.  Interested persons are invited to register by 16 March 2007.
