 Substantive Paper

Issue: An overview of the extend of poverty challenges in Africa, highlighting efforts that are being made by government, private sector and civil society to address these challenges in Africa.  Efforts made by researchers to assist policy-makers and implementers in addressing these challenges. The paper will also make recommendations on what researchers, policy-makers and implementers can do to make the fight against poverty effective. Best practices from countries that have made positive strides in addressing the problem, are highlighted.

Issue: The paper will show how women started a food security project as away of responding to the  poverty challenges

Case Study 3

Issue: The local community of Bethelsdorp in Port Elizabeth organised itself into a trust and engaged with   researchers and the government to address local challenges of poverty, unemployment and    development.

Case Study 4

Issue: The research will focus on how the University of Dar es Salaam’s Institute of Marine Sciences    engaged local communities in Zanzibar in the development of poverty alleviation projects, viz.    seaweed and fish farming
