HIGHLIGHTS The goal of the Southern Africa regional integration agenda is to create a fully integrated and internationally competitive region with the over-arching objective of poverty reduction. It is aligned to several continental initiatives and regional agenda such as the Abuja Treaty (1991), the African Common Market (2019-2023), the Africa Union and the New Partnership for Africa‟s Development (NEPAD). The two key Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in the region (COMESA and SADC) are taking steps towards this continental vision and are both closely aligned with the AU/NEPAD African Action Plan (AAP), 2010-2015 that is anchored on NEPAD‟s Guiding Principles.
