PED into IDP
Page 2

Important focus areas of the Department of Social Development’s Strategy on Population and Development are to promote sustainable human development by focusing on population, environment and development (PED) interactions especially on local government level. Specifically, we aim to enhance leadership and management capacity in the government and civil society to integrate population, development and environment interactions into policies and programmes.   The training sessions are accredited with the international LEAD programme. Participants can continue to also attend other courses of the LEAD associate programme at any of the LEAD’s 14 member programmes worldwide.
Integrated Development Planning (IDP) as planning approach used by municipalities to direct development objectives, through cost-effective ways of providing services need to take linkages between population, environment and development into account in order to achieve sustainable development.  Therefore, this course assists development planners in all spheres of government to effectively get an in-depth understanding of the integration of population, environment and development within the context of the local IDP’s as well as the actual functionality of IDPs.

In doing so, the following objectives are pursued:

  • To introduce the concept of Sustainable Development and its operational implications, which serve as platform on which the remainder of the course plays out.
  • To aid the comprehension of urban challenges faced by IDP by placing it in the context of the population/environment/development nexus.
  • To introduce tools for sustainability with which urban challenges are to be addressed in the context of Sustainable Development as well as IDP.
  • To explore the challenges faced by IDP from within this planning process itself, with special reference on the question of information availability.
  • To illustrate how sustainability tools and methodologies can be integrated into IDP in aid of urban sustainability, as well as IDP functionality, through the production of relevant information.
  • To focus on operational aspects of selected sustainability methodologies and thus enable participants to produce information for the IDP process themselves.
  • To promote and illustrate the utility of two essential sustainability tools – that is, Community Visioning and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
