The PED Linkage Among the issues covered here will be debates over the earth’s carrying capacity, demographic transitions in the Third World, relationships between fertility levels, gender equality and development, national immigration policies, poverty and resource degradation, food security, and the role of technological change and social institutions. Many scientists and foreign policy experts are concerned about the impact of this growth on the environment and on natural resource allocation. Additional concerns are raised about the impact on economic development and sustainable development. The Population Environment and Development Nexus An important focus area of the Department of Social Development’s Strategy on Population and Development is to promote sustainable human development by focusing on population, environment and development (PED) interactions especially on local government level. Specifically, the aim is to enhance leadership and management capacity in the government and civil society to integrate population, development and environment interactions into policies and programmes. The courses relating to the PED NEXUS can be viewed via the menu to the right: CAPACITY BUILDING
