The National Population Unit researches and advises Government on population policy and planning and development issues; and builds capacity to integrate population issues into development strategies. The objective of the programme is to research, analyze and interpret population and development trends in order to inform policy-making and planning; monitor, evaluate and facilitate the implementation of the population policy through intergovernmental programmes and develop capacity to integrate population issues into development. The Population and Development Information and Knowledge Centre (PDIKC) provides information on topics related to population and development issues. |

10 Year Population Policy Review (Draft Chapters)

This report presents a ten-year review of the implementation of the Population Policy since its adoption in 1998. It looks into what has happened since its inception, and how it has influenced planners and decision makers in integrating population issues into their plans and programmes. The report is detailed in ten papers that discuss the extent to which the objectives, strategies and concerns of the national Population Policy have been translated into action through different plans and programmes of government, private organisations and civil society, in order to improve the quality of life of South Africans. These papers relate to: Sexual and reproductive health and rights; HIV and AIDS; The youth; Families, households and children; Migration and urbanisation; Gender equality, equity and the empowerment of women; Population, environment and development; Poverty and inequality; Population and development research; Technical capacity development and institutional arrangements for policy implementation.

APPLIED POPULATION SCIENCES TRAINING AND RESEARCH (APSTAR)
APSTAR is the Applied Population Sciences Training and Research Programme of the School of Development Studies, University of KwaZulu-Natal. Its aim is to enhance the understanding of population issues in relation to the broader sphere of development challenges. It focuses on how to integrate population factors into policies, strategies, programmes, projects and activities.
