Centre for Population and Development Activities (CEDPA)  

Founded in 1975, the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA) is an internationally recognized non-profit organization that improves the lives of women and girls in developing countries.

Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD)

LEAD is an international non-profit organisation with a fast growing network of 1600 leaders in more than 80 countries.LEAD has 14 regional offices, each led by dedicated multi-lingual training staff who design and deliver high quality training and capacity building courses and activities. Activities include the training of future Fellows design and delivery of new training programmes with partners, delivery of short courses and production of learning resources and training materials.


Planned Parenthood Association of South Africa (PPASA)

Established in 1932, PPASA is a leading non-governmental organisation providing reproductive health information and services. PPASA is structured as a membership organisation. A volunteer-based National Council, consisting largely of delegates elected by Provincial Committees, serves as the superior governing body. The roles of the National Council and Provincial Committees are to support and advise the CEO and the Provincial Directors respectively on strategic and operational issues.

The Joint Economics Aids and Poverty Programme JEAPP

The Joint Economics Aids and Poverty Programme – JEAPP - was initiated in late 2000 following the Durban AIDS Conference after which it became apparent that there was a dearth of information on the economic impact of HIV/AIDS in the context of Southern Africa.  JEAPP coordinates research and policy support studies which are funded through several donors.

The School of Development Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal

The School of Development Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal is a multi-disciplinary research and post-graduate teaching institution that offers course-work or dissertation Masters degrees in Development Studies and Population Studies. In addition, the School offers a diploma option and has a thesis-based PhD programme. The School incorporates the Centre for Civil Society. Applied Population Sciences Training Programme (APSTAR) is a training programme offered by the School in partnership with Department of Social Development and United Nations Population Fund. This series of short courses has the aim of building capacity in all spheres of government and non-governmnetal organisations, on how to integrate population factors into development policies, programmes and activities.

Centre for Aids Development, Research ; Evaluation (Cadre)

The Centre for AIDS Development, Research and Evaluation (CADRE) is a South African non-profit organisation working in the area of HIV/AIDS social research, programme development and communication.

Centre for Health Systems Research ; Development, University of the Free State

The Centre for Health Systems Research & Development (CHSR&D) was established at the University of the Free State (UFS) in 1993. The CHSR&D came about due to recognition of a longstanding tradition of research and training in medical sociology/sociology of health and health care in the Department of Sociology.


Reproductive Health Research Unit 

The Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit (RHRU) is more than a research unit. It is an organisation that uses its research findings to influence policy and improve service delivery through training and programmatic interventions

International organisations

Committee for International Cooperation in National Research in Demography (CICRED)

Founded in 1972, it aims at developing cooperation amongst national population research centres, and encouraging new research. It serves as a platform for interaction between research centres and international organizations, such as United Nations Population Division, United Nations Population Fund ( UNFPA), World Health Organization ( WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO).

International Union for Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP)


The International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) promotes scientific studies of demography and population-related issues. Originally founded in 1928 and reconstituted in 1947, the IUSSP is the leading international professional association for individuals interested in population studies. The IUSSP network includes almost 2000 members world-wide, one third of whom are from developing countries. The IUSSP’s main goal is to "foster relations between persons engaged in the study of demography in all countries of the world, and stimulate interest in demographic matters among governments, national and international organisations, scientific bodies and the general public.

Union for African Population Studies

The Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) is a scientific, panafrican, non-profit organization. The UAPS was created at the initiative of the Economic Commision for Africa ECA at the end of the Third Joint Conference of African Planners, Statisticians and Demographers which took place in Addis Ababa in March 1984. The main objective of the Union is to promote the scientific study of population in Africa through Research, Training, Information, technical Assistance and Cooperation.

World Health Organisation 

The World Health Organization is the United Nations specialized agency for health. It was established on 7 April 1948. WHO's objective, as set out in its Constitution, is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. Health is defined in WHO's Constitution as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

United Nations Population Fund

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.
