What is APSTAR?
- It is the Applied Population Sciences Training and Research Programme of the School of Development Studies, University of KwaZulu-Natal
- The Aim: To enhance the understanding of population issues in relation to the broader sphere of development challenges
- The focus: How to integrate population factors into policies, strategies, programmes, projects and activities.
How will APSTAR help?
You will gain:
- Basic demographic skills for better understanding of population dynamics;
- Skills to understand priority research areas on population matters;

Capacity to undertake various sectoral development planning, incorporate population issues and challenges;
- Expertise on integrating population priorities into development policies and programmes; and
- Knowledge on the subject Population Studies that will enable you to enhance your career.
- A 68+% pass mark will provide access to the one-year Master’s programme in Population Studies at UKZN.
DURATION
The programme is presented over a 8‑month period. This includes four (4) modules that are presented over five (5) consecutive days each (1 week), as well as “take home” assignments. Modules build on each other.

PUBLIC SEMINAR ON TEN YEARS OF POPULATION POLICY IMPLEMENTATION IN SOUTH AFRICA (1998-2008)
The national Department of Social Development, through the Chief Directorate: Population and Development, hosted a three-day public seminar in Pretoria from 1-3 December 2008 to present evidence on the implementation of the Population Policy for South Africa (1998 – 2008), focusing on changes in population and development trends and dynamics during the past ten years. The information contained in the various presentations will center around the following thematic areas:

National South South Workshop on Reproductive Health and the Achievement of the ICPD PoA and MDGs.
This is a south-south workshop on access to reproductive health and the achievement of International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Plan of Action (PoA) and the Millennium Development Goals.
The workshop will be hosted by the National Department of Social Development in partnership with Partners in Population Development (PPD) and the Department of Health. South Africa formally joined PPD in Morocco in November 2007. PPD aims to strengthen south-south cooperation, capacities, networks and partnerships, and enhance resource availability. PPD also promotes the integration of HIV&AIDS and reproductive health into plans and programmes.
The workshop will be used to conscientize stakeholders on PPD functions and how South Africa can benefit as a member of the organization. Discussions will also focus on access to reproductive health services, family planning, HIV/AIDS and capacity building.

The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Dr Jean Swanson-Jacobs delivered the key note address on the occasion of World Population Day, Voortrekker Monument Hall-Pretoria.
2008 WORLD POPULATION DAY COMMEMORATIONS ACTIVIES
On the 11 July 2008 South Africa observed the 19th World
Population Day. This year's event focused on Family Planning which is
aimed at enabling couples and individuals to decide freely and responsibly about the number of children and also to have information
and means to do so and to ensure informed choices. To mark this day, activities were planned by the CDPD as well as PPUs in most of the provinces
